Abstract
Two groups of Dutch Belted strain rabbits were supplemented with alpha-tocopherol and exposed to a hypoxic state equivalent to 30,000 feet altitude. One group for varying lengths of time on 3 consecutive days, another group for 7 hours/ day for 3 days. No animal dietetically deficient in tocopherol survived the 3 consecutive decompressions while 23.9% normal diet animals survived these 3 exposures and 55.5% alpha-tocopherol supplemented animals survived. It was concluded that rabbits deficient in tocopherol to a dystrophic level and normal diet animals did not elecit as much resistance to the hypoxia factor as did alpha-tocopherol supplemented animals. Keywords
