PROVENANCE DIFFERENCES IN THE STRATIFICATION REQUIREMENTS OF WHITE PINE

Abstract
White pine seeds from 11 provenances were subjected to seven periods of stratification, ranging from 0 to 60 days, and were subsequently germinated. Highly significant differences were found between the provenances in response to stratification. Seeds from northern sources were found to require considerably less stratification than seeds from southern sources. Highly significant correlations were found between average germination of seeds from the different provenances and the latitude and mean January temperature of their origins, for the stratification periods tested.
