Relationship between Hereford Cow Weight and Progeny Performance2

Abstract
Weights were obtained for 1,584 cows in 17 Virginia herds during 1959 and 1970. Progeny records were available from 1,011 of these cows. The data were divided into four subsets for analysis, because complete information was not available on all cows. A preliminary analysis was conducted to obtain adjustment factors for the important environmental factors that affect cow weight. Both adjusted and unadjusted cow weights were related to progeny performance, as measured by preweaning ADG and 205-day weight. The linear regression coefficient for ADG of calf on cow weight ranged from 0.22±0.04 for unadjusted cow weight to 0.46±0.05 g per day per kilogram of adjusted cow weight. The linear regression coefficient of 205-day weight of calf on unadjusted cow weight was 0.05±0.02 and on adjusted cow weight ranged from 0.07±0.02 to 0.11±0.02 kg per kilogram of cow weight.
