Discrimination learning or retardates in relation to incentive motivation and attention.

Abstract
Reinforced a group of mental retardates (Group 1) for correct choice on 1 side of a 2-choice simultaneous junk-object discrimination with a penny, and for correct choice to the other side with a washer. Group 2 was regarded on 1 side with candy corn; on the other with Chiclet. Group 3 received the same reward (candy corn or Chiclet) for correct choice to either side. The use of different incentives interfered with learning attention to the irrelevant position cue, and an imbalance of incentives exerted an interfering "pull" to 1 side. Group 1 yielded the fewest correct responses and Group 3 the most. Group 2 fell in between. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
