Photoconduction in single crystals of a pentamethinium cyanine dye

Abstract
The photoconductivity of a pentamethinium cyanine dye is studied on different crystal faces for light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the pentamethinium chain. According to the spectral dependence the first step in the photoconduction process is the excitation of singlet excitons. Free carriers are generated in the volume of the crystals. The photocurrent is recombination limited. The photoconductivity is found to be insensitive to irradiation with high doses of high energetic ions.
