Abstract
Activity coefficients of hydrochloric acid in mixed solutions with manganous chloride have been measured at total ionic strengths of 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mol kg–1 using cells containing hydrogen and silver–silver chloride electrodes. An interpretation of these results in terms of Scatchard's equation for the excess free energy has allowed the calculation of the activity coefficients of manganous chloride in the mixtures. Harned's rule is a good description of the variation found for both the measured activity coefficients of hydrochloric acid and for the derived activity coefficients of manganous chloride. Keywords
