Abstract
Lanthanide bisphthalocyanines are shown to exist in at least three different coloured forms in acetonitrile solution: blue, green and red. The conversion of the blue to green and the green to red species can be achieved by the addition of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. These processes can be quantitatively reversed by the addition of base. The results are discussed in relation to various proposed mechanisms for the observed electrochromism of lanthanide bisphthalocyanine films. Keywords
