Abstract
Twenty-nine episodes of nervous system disease were observed in a study of 63 patients with acute leukemia. Neurologic manifestations occurred in 22 of 42 patients (52.4%) followed until their death. Neither the type of leukemia nor the sex or age of the patient appeared to influence the incidence of such manifestations. These episodes are classed into 3 groups. (1) those due to complications of the disease (a-hemorrhage, b-inf ection); (2) those presumed due to leukemic infiltrations (a-intracranial, b-peripheral nerve); (3) those due to miscellaneous disturbances. Fourteen episodes fall within the first group, 11 within the second, and 4 within the third. The nature and cause of these manifestations are discussed. It is stressed that neurologic manifestations may improve with antileukemic therapy even in the absence of bone marrow improvement and that neurologic manifestations may occur in the presence of bone marrow remission. Keywords
