Abstract
Classical linear solutions (such as Volkersen, Goland and Reissner) of the lap joint problem are discussed, together with more advanced versions of the same type. Finite element techniques are shown to be the best way of treating the non-linear mechanics and material behaviour in real joints. Finally, when applied to composite adherends, the principles given here show how the strength can be increased by up to 500%.Keywords
