IMPLANTATION OF CRYSTALLINE TESTOSTERONE IN THE MONKEY1

Abstract
A comparison of the effects in the accessory genitalia of immature, castrate macaques was made following subcut. injs. of testosterone propionate with those following implantations of pellets of crystalline testosterone. The his-tologic changes in the accessory genitalia following implantation were identical with those following inj. A slightly greater relative increase of wt. occurred in the cranial lobe as compared with the caudal lobe regardless of how the hormone was given. Taking the increase in wt. of the accessory genitalia as a criterion, testosterone in the form of crystalline pellets produced a greater relative increase in wt. This was calculated in mg. of accessory genitalia tissue per mg. of absorbed hormone. These expts. indicated that in the primate implantation of testosterone in the form of crystals might be a more efficient and more physiological method than that of injecting testosterone propionate in oil.
