Abstract
A role for serotonin in the development of depressive illness has been suggested since the sixties (e.g. by Lapin and Oxenkrug 1969). Evidence for the importance of the neurotransmitter has largely been indirect and drawn, inter al., from pharmacological data. Many antidepressant treatments have effects on serotonin neurons. The monoamine oxidase inhibitors and some of the tricyclic antidepressants potentiate serotonergic functions, and recently this was found to be true also for convulsive treatments (Green and Grahame-Smith 1978).Keywords
