Modified Goeckerman Regimen: Decreased Treatment Time

Abstract
To the Editor.—During the last decade, we modified our Goeckerman regimen. The psoriatic patient received a topical application of a corticosteroid (usually triamcinolone acetenide, 0.1% or 0.025%) and was covered for eight to ten hours daily with a plastic exercise suit ("space suit"). Some patients preferred to wear the plastic suit during the eight hours before sleep; however, most used it at night. The ambient temperature in our inpatient unit is near 22 C most of the year; yet, sweating produced enough discomfort in some to necessitate discontinuation of treatment. Minimal folliculitis did not require discontinuation; frank furunculosis did.Previous duration of hospitalization for the Goeckerman regimen was approximately three weeks. With this modified regimen, treatment averaged 13.4 days for the last 53 patients. Discharge occurred when lesions were no longer grossly acanthotic.
