Abstract
Electrophoretic measurements of 11 strains of Brucella under carefully controlled conditions indicate that surface properties of mature organisms are such that their electrokinuetic potentials are constant during long periods of cultivation when dissociation is avoided. Storage in a refrigerator for periods up to four months of Brucella in physiological saline with or without 0.2 per cent formaldehyde causes no change in their electrokinetic potential with respect to acetate buffer. With smooth strains of Brucella no change in mobility with pH could be observed between pH 3.75 and pH 6.75 when suspended in buffers of constant ionic strength. Electrophoretic mobilities of dissociated strains are affected greatly by buffers with low pH values, being reduced to zero at pH values from 2.3 to 3.3. Different strains of Brucella may show different variations of electrophoretic mobility with age of culture. S strains of the bovine, porcine and acprine types have the same electrophoretic mobility value. Recently isolated strains and laboratory strains recently passed through guinea pigs have slightly lower mobilities than those cultivated on media for a few transfers. This publication has 14 references indexed in Scilit:
