Notes on Flight and Host-Selection Behavior of the Pine Engraver,Ips pini(Coleoptera: Scolytidae)

Abstract
In the presence of attractants, Ips pini (Say) flew upwind, but upwind response decreased in winds above 1 mile per hour. Beetles tended to fly downwind in the absence of attractants. Released insects flew higher at lower wind velocities and higher temperatures; their maximum flight speed was 3–4 mph. Beetles exhibited host material preferences by selecting Pinus resinosa over P. strobus logs, and by selecting horizontal over vertical logs.
