Abstract
We show, under rather general conditions, that duality implies the following alternatives: Either the number of mass-degenerate resonances increases very rapidly (exponentially, if resonances disintegrate according to the statistical model) with the resonance mass, or there exist very strong selection rules that effectively forbid most of the disintegration channels for a class of heavy resonances. Keywords
