Salivary Neuraminidase. II. Its Source in Human Whole Saliva

Abstract
[Abstract only.][long dash]In an effort to determine the sources of salivary neuraminidase in human whole saliva, experiments were conducted with whole saliva, submandibular/sublingual and parotid secretions of 10 clinically healthy subjects. It was found that submandibular/sublingual secretion possessed neuraminidase activity but not the same activity as that of whole saliva; however, parotid saliva had no activity at all. Millipore filtration of whole saliva appeared to reduce but not eliminate enzyme activity. Homogenization of salivary sediment produced increased enzyme activity suggesting that cellular components such as oral leukocytes and/or desquamated epithelial cells may be sources for the enzyme.
