Abstract
In Russell''s autopsies, made during the Civil War, the mean brain wt. is 1354.8 gm. for blacks and 1333.6 gm. for mixed bloods, against 1470.6 gm. for whites. The Negro brain is, on the average, 8-10% lighter than the white brain. The accuracy of Russell''s weighings is attested by the symmetrical character of the distributions and the fact that the coefficients of variation are not far from 8%, a figure characteristic for brain wt. variability. The brain wts. of the Negro-white mixtures decrease with increase in Negro blood.
