Blastomyces Dermatitidis Infection in the Congo

Abstract
Summary The second case of blastomycosis, caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was described. The disease occurred in a 15 year-old boy, a life-time resident of the Province of Southern Kasai. This represents the sixth case from the African continent (Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2; Republic of South Africa, 1; Tanzania, 1; Tunisia, 1; and Uganda, 1). In view of the established occurrence of B. dermatitidis infections in Africa and the existence of possible endemic foci in Latin America, it is suggested that the disease caused by this fungus be referred to simply as blastomycosis rather than as the geographically inaccurate North American blastomycosis.
