Abstract
This synthesis attempts to bring together studies and essays on characteristics, attitudes, and values of those who choose or avoid, persevere in or leave the field of aging. Journals representing different aspects of the field of gerontology were reviewed for the years 1962-1969. Essays cite stereotyped attitudes toward the aged, negative cultural values attached to aging, feelings about death as contributing to the avoidance of work with aged, while statistical studies measure adjustment to aging, attitudes toward aging and the aged, and social characteristics of those who choose to work with the aged. The last provide some factors which have limited predictive ability but more rigorous studies need to be undertaken. Keywords
