Abstract
A survey of the fish fauna of 3 central Asiatic rivers shows that the rate of flow greatly influences the distribution of fish. There are well marked communities of spp. associated with the rate of flow. Data are given on adaptive correlation to physical surroundings. The rheocole fishes are torpedo shaped to offer less resistance to the current, while the limnadocoles are fishes with compressed sides and high bodies which offer more resistance to the current. The author places the carp in a group called rheobionates, since it lives in main channels, far up in rivers and in the backwaters. The possible cause for this distribution is the presence of suitable food.
