Abstract
Removal of the non-gravid uterus during the oestrous cycle does not influence the time of the next oestrus and does not influence normal ovarian periodicity for up to 13 months. Hysterectomy prolongs the length of pseudopregnancy by approximately 7.5 days. A critical period occurs in the life span of the corpora lutea of pseudopregnancy on or about day 7; hysterectomy prior to this time results in continued luteal maintenance but is without effect if performed on day 8. In the pregnant animal hysterectomy up to day 8 post-coitum results in continued luteal maintenance while luteal regression occurs in the majority of animals hysterectomized after this time. Keywords
