Age and Sex Determination of the Chukar Partridge

Abstract
A technique is described and a key provided for determining age and sex of the chukar partridge (Alectoris graeca) from wings during the fall hunting season.. Captive birds were observed and measured at regular intervals throughout the summer-fall months and their measurements checked against similar measurements of wild birds which were aged and sexed by internal examination. Chukars may be rapidly aged by the presence of mottled secondaries in young birds, the molting of the outer 2 primaries by adults, or the longer length of greater upper primary covert 9 in adults. The greater lengths of primaires 1 and 3 in males provide a valid and accurate method for determining sex of both juveniles and adults when a measuring board is used. This method may be applied from mid-Sept. through Dec.
