Abstract
Salmonella typhi has developed a high degree of resistance to chloramphenicol. Orally administered amoxicillin was used to treat 25 patients with typhoid fever due to chloramphenicol-resistant S. typhi. Ampicillin was administered to 13 patients. Of the 25 patients who received amoxicillin, all were free of fever within five days, and all cultures were negative within 72 hr. Cultures remained negative after treatment. There were no untoward effects. Orally administered amoxicillin was as effective as iv ampicillin in curing typhoid fever caused by chloramphenicol-resistant S. typhi.
