Abstract
Homogenates and cell-free extracts of S. recurrentis contain enzymes of the Embden-Meyerhof pathway of glycolysis. The following enzymes were demonstrated both in combination and independently: hexokinase, phosphoglucoisomerase, phosphofructokinase, aldolase, phosphoglyceraldehyde de-hydrogenase, triose phosphate isomerase, oxidized diphosphopyridine nucleotide dependent [alpha]-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, phospho-glycerate kinase, phosphoglyceromutase, enolase, pyruvate kinase and oxidized diphosphopyridine nucleotide-dependent lactic dehydrogenase. The general properties of these enzymes appear to resemble those from other sources. Hexokinase activity resides in the participate portion of the organisms, whereas the other enzymes are soluble. At least some of them require metal ions and intact sulphydryl groups for full activity.
