γ-Radiolysis of ethylene glycol aqueous solutions

Abstract
γ-radiolysis of aqueous solutions of ethylene glycol (1 × 10–3 M) with oxygen (1 × 10–3 M) gives hydroxy acetaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide as the only products. G(Aldehyde)= 2·6 is independent of pH as, shown by experiments conducted at pH 5·5 and 2·0. G(Hydrogen peroxide)= 3·6 is higher than the predicted value of G(H2O2)+½G(reduction). A mechanism for the formation of both hydroxyacetaldehyde and excess of hydrogen peroxide is suggested.
