Abstract
A Rayleigh‐Ritz procedure is outlined for deriving approximate equations of ``particle'' motion (the over‐all motion of a singularity‐free particlelike solution) in a superimposed small‐amplitude external field. The method is illustrated here for a classical nonlinear model scalar field theory. A relativistic generalization of the approximation procedure is described. Keywords
