Pathology of intrathecal phenol injection in man

Abstract
Three cases of subarachnoid injection of phenol are reported. In 2 of these cases, there was severe degeneration of myelin affecting predominantly the outer zone of posterior roots with involvement of all types of fiber. The concept that phenol acts only on small nerve fibers is not supported by these observations. It is possible, however, that the large fibers may show a certain amount of preferential resistance to phenol.
