Prey Recognition by Efferia frewingi (Diptera: Asilidae)12

Abstract
Models made of cardboard and yarn varying in size, shape, and color were used to determine what factors elicited investigatory and/or attack behavior by Efferia frewingi Wilcox. The results indicated that different characteristics of the prey elicited different responses from male and female asilids. Females differentiated between the sizes of models used and responded with greater vigor to models with surface areas of 6.0 and 11.0 mm2; males failed to discriminate between the different sizes of models. However, both sexes responded preferentially to black, oblong models.
