Abstract
Through a review of the major reasons young athletes drop out of sports the basic psychologic needs of young sters are identified. Although young athletes are not unique in these psychologic needs, each youngster is unique in how these needs are met. The paper concludes by countering some of the negative publicity youth sports programs have received. Keywords
