Anaerobic Streptococcal Infections Simulating Gas Gangrene

Abstract
Three cases of anaerobic streptococcal infections simulating gas gangrene occurred. Gram stains of necrotic tissue of pus prior to or at the time of surgery can distinguish these two entities. Conservative debridement of anaerobic streptococcal infection is important. Organisms recovered from all three patients proved resistant to penicillin. The importance of this report lies in the observation that anaerobic streptococcal myonecrosis and cellulitis may not be as unusual as previously thought.
