Abstract
We have tested genomic DNAs for glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) patterns in four individuals, each of four chromosomal species (2n = 52, 54, 58 and 60) of the subterranean mole rats of the Spalax ehrenbergi complex in Isreal. We used the partial rat cDNA pRGAPDH as a probe, on moles rats DNA digested with EcoRI. The results indicate that (1) GAPDH belongs to a multigene family in S. ehrenbergi; (2) This multigene family is made up of 15-20 GAPDH related sequences (pseudogenes); and (3) The pattern found resembles more that of Mesocritus than that of Rattus or Mus. These results support the hypothesis tha the amplification of GAPDH related sequences occurred in the period following the adaptive radiation of Spalacidae and presumably before that of Muridae, i.e., between 20 and 10 MYA.This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
