Abstract
Compared to the United States and many other western countries, Australia's retirement income arrangements are unique. Described are the age pension, private pensions, recent changes in these provisions by the Federal Government and the factors that shaped them. These changes represent a profound shift in the traditional roles of the age pension and private pensions. The difficulties experienced by the Government in introducing the changes underscore the political sensitivity of retirement income policy in Australia.
