Abstract
20,000 units of penicillin in 200 ml. of 2-10 g. disodium phosphate or 5 g. trisodium citrate antacid solns. were given orally 2 hrs. after breakfast. The urinary excretion each 2 hrs. thereafter was measured turbidimetrically using Staphylococcus aureus 6538. An avg. of 18% of the dose was recovered in the urine in 21 trials as compared with no more than 3% if antacids were omitted. Oral adm. was attended by large individual differences in urinary penicillin excretion. More penicillin was excreted when given in water after an overnight fast than when given in water 2 hrs. after breakfast. Addition of antacids increased these overnight fast values. This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
