Abstract

The organism being tested is streaked onto the surface of a penicillin agar medium previously inoculated with a penicillin-sensitive organism. Penicillinase elaborated by the organism being tested diffuses into the agar, inactivating the penicillin and thus permitting the seeded penicillin-sensitive organism to grow out. The growth occurs as a stippled zone of satellite colonies around the streak.
