Abstract
The importance of recognizing the "prespondylitic syndrome" of ankylosing spondylitis in childhood is stressed. Difficulties in diagnosis in its early stages are discussed. If the possibility of the condition is borne in mind, the slightest radiological changes in the sacroiliac joints will assist in early diagnosis. Keywords
