Abstract
The characteristics of patients who adhered to the prescribed procedures in a six-week meprobamate trial were compared with those of patients who did not comply with the doctor's instructions. Results suggest that patients who deviated from the prescribed drug programme were sicker initially, of lower socio-economic backgrounds, and were less apt to have had previous treatment with a psychotropic medication. However, of those patients who had prior exposure to psychotropic medication, the deviating group tended to have the greater density of exposure; i.e. to have taken more and a greater variety of psychotropic medications within the last year.
