Abstract
Charges are only rarely brought against psychiatric inpatients for offences commited in hospital, although practice varies considerably. The reasons for and against police involvement are reviewed in this paper. There is a need to develop clear guidelines, more uniformity of practice and constructive alternatives to prosecution. Keywords
