The Groundstate OH Spectrum of the Galaxy NGC 253

Abstract
The 1665 and 1667 MHz OH profiles in NGC 253 show several narrow emission features lying in the middle of a broad absorption line. The emission is stronger at 1667 MHz and is unpolarized. It is more likely to be due to maser amplification of the radiation from the continuum source in the nucleus than to OH sources of the type associated with H II regions in our Galaxy. The broad features in the 1612 and 1720 MHz OH profiles show anomalies which vary progressively with velocity, as previously found in NGC 4945.
