Abstract
Functional unilateral corpora lutea were produced in 19 of 20 rabbits by direct intrafollicular injections of extracts of pregnancy urine, the contralateral ovary being removed 24 hrs. after injection. Results in 12 rabbits in which the contralateral ovary was not removed indicate that the presence of the contralateral untreated ovary or ripe follicles of that ovary is of little effect. Mechanically ruptured follicles are not more easily luteinized than ripe unruptured follicles. The direct injection of the ripe follicles of one ovary does not modify the response of the ripe follicles of the untreated ovary to normal changes prior to ovulation or to repeated intravenous injections of subminimal doses of active extracts. The production and maintenance of unilateral functional corpora lutea without evident changes in the ripe follicles of the other ovary appear to afford examples of growth and maintenance of functional lutein tissue without the secretion of a special luteinizing hormone or a greatly increased rate of secretion of a single gonadotropic hormone. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
