Abstract
Measurements have been made of the Ni content in cigarettes and of the partition of Ni in the ash and butt, mainstream and side-stream smokes. Six common brands of American cigarettes contained from 1.59 to 3.07 [mu]g Ni per cigarette. Twenty per cent of the total nickel was recovered from the main-stream smoke. Similar measurements were made on cigar and pipe tobaccos. The carcinogenic effects of inhaled Ni upon the respiratory tract have reviewed. It has been estimated that the amount of Ni inhaled in 1 year by a heavy cigarette smoker is approximately 3 x the amount of inhaled Ni which we have previously reported to be carcinogenic for the rat - an animal notably resistant to the induction of pulmonary cancer. This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
