Communicating With Autistic Children

Abstract
The delayed and disordered language of autistic children is discussed as it affects the delivery of health care and other services in interdisciplinary settings. Current research is reviewed in terms of four major areas of communication-related deficits associated with early childhood autism: language delay, need for sameness, and impairments in social and information processing skills. Within this framework, methods for communicating with autistic children in health-care settings are presented.
