AIR-BORNE POLLEN SURVEYS IN EASTERN CANADA

Abstract
Practically no air-borne pollen was collected until the first of May at any of the seven sites established in eastern Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces. Trees and shrubs such as the alders, birches, pines and spruces produced the greater part of the pollen from May to June. Peak grass pollen periods occurred at most of the stations in the latter part of June and July. Ragweed pollen was collected only m small amounts at all the sites except Ste. Anne de la Pocatière, Quebec. Pollen from other plants known to cause hay fever were recorded in very small amounts. Pollen grains from poplars, birches, pines, spruces, balsam far, hemlocks, juinpers and ragweeds were collected on Sable Island, approximately 175 miles east of Halifax, yet none of these plants is known to grow on the island.
