Abstract
The paper summarizes the functions of open heterogeneous groups in therapeutic communities. A recent research project, Group processes in therapeutic communities, has shown that it is very difficult to obtain a »good enough« (Winnicot) group culture within therapeutic communities that are obliged to treat mostly psychotic patients and personality disorders. The groups will mostly be extremely vulnerable and easily turn to excessive collective regressions, or even cease to exist as groups in the psychological sense of the word. In the 1970's milieu-therapeutic groups were an unquestioned element in Norwegian therapeutic communities. This is not so obvious any more. There is a need for more thinking, theory and research in this area, and less need for blind practicism. Keywords
