Abstract
The purpose of this article is to discuss the incidence and management of associated medical issues in individuals with spinal cord injury of violent etiology. Penetrating wounds carry a heavy prognosis, and coexisting injuries along with posttraumatic complications increase the likelihood of morbidity and mortality. Medical professionals must become increasingly familiar with the management challenges encountered in this population. A systems approach utilizing a specialized team of health care providers and delivered over the continuum of care, from the accident scene throughout long-term follow-up is advocated. Keywords
