Medical Complications in Violence-Induced Spinal Cord Injury

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to discuss the incidence and management of associated medical issues in individuals with spinal cord injury of violent etiology. Penetrating wounds carry a heavy prognosis, and coexisting injuries along with posttraumatic complications increase the likelihood of morbidity and mortality. Medical professionals must become increasingly familiar with the management challenges encountered in this population. A systems approach utilizing a specialized team of health care providers and delivered over the continuum of care, from the accident scene throughout long-term follow-up is advocated.
