A New Scalar Electrocardiographic Computer Program

Abstract
A new computer electrocardiographic program has been evaluated on 1000 electrocardiograms and compared with clinical interpretation. The computer can differentiate normal from abnormal ECGs with 97% reliability. The computer contour statement accuracy was almost identical with the 92% clinical accuracy. False-positives and false-negatives were comparable. A major flaw in the computer analysis is the inability to analyze complex arrhythmias such as atrioventricular dissociation, atrial arrhythmia with varying block, or sinus rhythm with multiple ectopic events; however, the program consistently states "undetermined rhythm" for these arrhythmias. With the exception of complex arrhythmias this program seems adequate for routine analysis of ECGs with minimal physician overread.
