Ovarian cysts complicating pregnancy

Abstract
Summary Fifteen cases of ovarian cyst complicating pregnancy were reviewed. Ultrasound examination in early pregnancy was the most reliable method of diagnosis. Eight patients had an elective operation and six of these progressed to normal delivery of liveborn children; one baby was stillborn at 33 weeks after placental abruption; and one pregnancy is progressing. Six patients had an emergency operation, and only one of these delivered normally at term; two aborted within a week of operation, one pregnancy was terminated for anencephaly and one patient underwent caesarean hysterectomy for malignancy. In one case the cyst was found only at caesarean section. Cystic teratoma was the commonest pathological diagnosis, benign mucinous cystadenoma the next most common.
