Effects of Ascorbic Acid on Gastric Secretion in Guinea Pigs

Abstract
Gastric juice was collected from prescorbutic and non-scorbutic guinea pigs, all of which bore surgically prepared gastrocutaneous fistulae. Studies were made of the normality, rate of secretion and ascorbic acid concentration of the gastric juice collected while saline, ascorbic acid in saline or histamine in saline was injected. Ascorbic acid elicited an increase in the normality and ascorbic acid concentration. Histamine evoked an increase in normality and rate of secretion, but did not stimulate the secretion of ascorbic acid. Saline was without effect. Gastric juice of prescorbutic animals exhibited a normality lower than that of the non-scorbutic group when histamine was not employed. This difference was not observed when histamine was given.
