Abstract
The aim of this paper is to review our present knowledge of the physics of electrical coronas and their interaction with surfaces, with some emphasis on phenomena which seem of importance for high voltage insulation. We will concentrate on fundamental and general subjects, in order to limit the scope of the paper and to make it serve as an introduction to the more specialized papers that follow. Keywords
