Abstract
A brief review of the evolution of metal vapor lasers is given. A chronology of some of the important discoveries and developments is followed by a summary of excitation mechanisms and other processes relevant to metal vapors. Features of commercial metal vapor lasers, including those of the helium-cadmium laser and the copper vapor laser, are described.
