Abstract
In a multi-centre study, 88 general practice patients (82 females and 6 males) with symptoms of acute urinary tract infection were randomly assigned to a 10 tablet (2 g) course of pivmecillinam either as a twice or 3-times daily dosage. Positive bacteriological cultures were obtained from 44 (50%) patients before treatment. The bacteriological cure rates were 95% in the 3-day treatment group and 96% in the 5-day group. A good clinical response was seen in the majority of patients and 55 (63%) patients became symptom-free by the follow-up visit. Pivmecillinam was well tolerated. Side-effects were reported in 3 (7%) patients in the 3-day treatment group and in 9 (17%) patients in the 5-day group. No patient had to stop therapy prematurely. Keywords
